Kingston upon Hull is a unique vibrant port city in East Yorkshire and City of Culture 2017 But this is not the topic of this blog excluding Cultural and sports aspects what the best thing about Hull? Most important?
The Docks?
As I said in the opening line Hull is a port city combined with the other Humber ports it is the largest and busiest in the UK.And by it self the busiest soft wood port in the UK it supports the single biggest power plant in the UK Drax as it main coal import port and we are the only ferry passenger terminal in Yorkshire in fact between Harwich and Newcastle. But many city have ports that are of national importance. So the port of Hull is a important fact about Hull a major employer. And that is now the port was also a a major port in the past and either was the first to do some thing or the largest at the time for example when Queens Dock opened it was at 10 acres the largest enclosed dock in the Country. Also historically speaking we were the largest whaling port in the world. The docks created much of Hull wealth and shaped the city so Historical cultural significant to the city and how it developed and financially (But this can be said about Liverpool docks in parts)
The wealth that the docks have and do create lead to merchant family in Hull been very wealthy and been able to afford to indulge in politics like the Wilberforce family and we all know what he did Help abolish slavery which Liverpool dock can not say it got rich off slaves Hull ended that immoral trade. We got rich of Wool Exports and the likes so again the Hull docks playing an important role. The Wealth of these family has left a mark in the shape of High street been lined with fine House. So the Docks/port makes a strong case for been the most important thing in Hull and if the Seimeins project goes ahead they will only get more important to the city.
And the docks in Hull developed from that muddy river that is the River Hull. It was once Hull most important link to the world. Now the M62/A63 has that role with the port of Hull and if you ever doubt this look at the amount of lorry on Myton gate bridge carrying containers and other loads from the Docks.
