How football got the yellow card wrong

ok every sport has different rules and regs but one thing they all have in common is some form of discipline and card system. I think that in football the yellow card has no value unlike lets say rugby. What good is a yellow card with no direct effect? *(or for that matter the report in Rugby league) To be a effective deterrent the yellow card has to have a form of direct punishment  at the time of the offence. The simplest version is ?
10 mins in the sin bin like in rugby.
Yes football fans think that the player will come back on rested and the offending team will gain an advantage in the long run of the game. Well that is simply not true! when you consider that one team will have and extra player in effect for ten mins and the other a man less so the offending teams 10 men have to work harder and get more  tired than the other side so it is and effective punishment.

This is just one example of how football is behind the times compared to other sports touch line tech and video ref in general are other areas football can improve to the benefit of it fan base
