What is in a name?

What is in a name ? As Shakespeare once said "A rose by an other name would smell as sweet"
A name preforms one major function it how we know things weather it people, objects or business.
So a few questions
Is it ok to change your name as a person? Yes/no it a slightly complex issue and not one that is the topic here.
So how about a business or organistion/sports club?
I would say from a business case point of view? No
A name is as much of a way to id a company and it brand. And brand is one of the most important asset a company has. The name is as big a part of brand as a companies logo, colours and other aspects of brand.
Does changing name effect brand?
As I said before name is a intergural part of brand. We know company by many things beside but the name is a big part. When you see a logo you may know the company or may not. Imagen seeing pepsi logo but they have changed their name would you be like oh thats x or thats pepsi who they where no longer. It would very likley effect all there adverisment campagins. Buy a X when it use to be Ford you would likely have no idea what they where trying to sell to you would you. It could effect sales quite badly.
Lets take a real world example Hull city.
The clubs owner claim the new name will increase sales I can not see how when you consider what I said above. When the fans in Hull don't like it! It will effect sales in Hull. And any way the name Hull tigers is not even a very strong renaming anyway. For one Tigers is a nick name and 2 loads of things  in the far east have tiger in their names. And the far east is where this rebrand is for.
A name most be reconisable for a company and where possible meet the following. Where possible
Be reconisable
Where possible say what the company does E.g. Clark trading we are a trader and it is our name. What are Hull Tigers? If I didn't know I would not say a football club. Where as Hull City Afc has football in the name. So on this level the renaming would fail.
Be unquie
