A city that is ? Hull / Logistics

The history of Hull is linked to logistics founded as a wool port called Wyke for the monks at Meaux later bought by King Edward the 1st to turn into a military port.
Hull is and always has been shaped by two rivers the Hull and the ''Humber'' far from been a barrier they were and are Hull's live blood.
And far from been based in the middle of know were in Hull Clark trading is based in a port city that is the 4th busiest port complex ( with the other Humber ports ) in Europe and of course the gateway to Europe ( and yes I mean Hull ) +ABP HULL

What is different about Hull?

We often hear loads of things that are rubbish about our great city Kingston upon Hull. OK a little less since we won the city of Culture for 2017. But still at times all the negatives that the press can think of are trotted out when it suits the media. But I am not going to discuss the whys and the likes on this. Rather than all that I thought I would look at all the unique/great/good things about Hull.

So here we go:

  1. Only Premier league football club in Yorkshire Hull City Afc and  playing in  the European league Europa cup
  2. Home to one of only 2 successful millennium projects the Deep
  3. We spark the English civil war
  4.   Our free museums
  5. Hms bounty was built in Hull original a shallow draft coal ship
  6. Home to the largest single span suspension bridge in the UK
  7. Hull has 3 royal charters and they can be seen in the city archives (one of them at least )

One Hull of a city

"To Hull hell and Halifax or so the poets say"/Good lord deliver us" is an old poem circa 1650 from what I have read but it was not always negative about Hull from what I have read but about how the two towns dealt with criminals.

Hull has often been the butt if many jokes over the years. Even from only Fools and Horses

I have done blogs on why Hull is great. Is this one any different ? not really I love Hull and enjoy blogging about this city's greatness.

Why is Hull one Hull of a city (Hell) ?

Like Hull or Hate us we have shaped the history of Britain in more ways than some city's how you may ask?
Simple Just for starters any of the following:

  1. We started the English Civil war
  2. Helped Abolish Slavery
  3. Lcd was invented in Hull
  4. Many National/multinational companies founded in Hull
Need any more ?
OK
  1. Home to aviation pioneer Amy Johnson

Negatives
A negative for Hull is sometimes said to be how the Humber and River Hull are muddy and brown yes it is true but Hull can not help this
  1. The Humber drains 1/5 of  England
  2. The river Hull flows thought the Wolds a Clay rich area

Lets hook up Hull!

Hull is served by Hull paragon interchange which is a diesel only line with Victorian and outdated signing up until Gilberdyke junction. This result in the line closing at 11pm every day. This can and does cause limits. Lets take Doncaster railway station it has freight trains passing thru at all hours this can not happen in
Hull (on the Route not the station) and it limit passenger train services to so 1 simple improvement need is to up grade the signals. First Hull trains are offering to upgrade the line between Hull and Selby by Electrifying it  at their expensive apx 90 million they think as the latest upgrade plans stop at Selby. The Government needs to back this for one how can they lose a private railway firm is offer to foot the bill (Hull trains is no a franchised line but a open access company so the tax payer is not paying for  this indirectly  ) Hull trains also says it will speed up journey times I will take they word on this. As I don't understand how this statement works do Electric trains accelerate faster? (one possible down side to this plan Hull railway station is often used in Tv for period dramas due to the lack of power lines) I understand that Electric trains are more reliable than diesel and are cleaner directly for the Environment and more modern. And will be better for business.

Greater Hull area what is it?

To start there is no greater Hull area offically but in reality there is! And should be one offically as many of the below would be in a greater city area in place like Manchester. How would you define a greater city area?
( Greater Hull would be Hessle, Analaby ,Cottingham,Willerby,Hedon,Bilton and a few others all in East riding) Any town or village within 5 miles or so of Hull not listed as well
The area that benifits from directly the main larger city. Lets start with Hessle if not for Hull would it still have a train station ? I think not Dr B would of axed the line if it had not been the main Hull track. Or again were do the majority of Hessle work? HULL!
Hull is the largest city no only city in East riding and the largest place by a long shot.
When you are driving on the A63 into Hull where does Hessle end Hull start? It seems almost seemless the same go on the maps for several villages around.
These place benifit from Hull but Hull does not Benifit from them. And that how I would define a greater city area where close smaller town and village need the larger city to surive. And in Hull's case were on a map look like a ward/suburb of Hull. A further example east Riding council use Hull recycling centre and tips for the Hull village areas. I could keep going the examples and reason are long.
As it stands a Offical Greater Hull does and will not exist but should HULL has very tight and narrow boundrys compared to many places creating Greater Hull could benifit Hull and the surronding Towns and villages in many ways
A larger Local authority with more Citzens would have more clout than Hull City and east riding combined at the moment I think. After all East Riding Council has a wide area to cover and consider a Greater Hull authority could better cover it larger area than Hull council have now an area with combined intrest anyway.
